Chapter Twelve

Wendy ran along the grass—next to the curb—with Tommy clutching her wrist as opposed to her shirt. He demanded a more personal touch after what he'd just witnessed, and she needed reassurance that he was with her at all times without the burden of turning her head to check. She refused to slow down after what happened moments ago. She never even had a chance to learn that little boy's name. It felt like a particularly cruel ending to the life of someone so young and innocent, but that appeared to be the way of the world now.

Large spiders littered the streets as she caught a glimpse of the occasional sixteen-legged monster crawling on top of the long row of vehicles to their left out of the corner of her eye. Birds descended from the night sky without warning and attacked everyone from children to grown men. All she heard and saw was suffering. Pain—immense pain that few human beings ever deserved to experience. It was what she'd always imagined Hell being like.

Wendy observed the terrain before they arrived at Cedar Street. The intersection up ahead was blocked with abandoned vehicles, leaving everyone on the road unable to make it through town and access the highway unless they somehow found another way around or through the impenetrable traffic. The numerous headlights in the otherwise complete darkness created a somewhat surreal feeling. It shined light upon the battlefield, but failed to properly aid any of the combatants on the side being slaughtered so badly. These creatures thrived in the night. They seemed to operate as effortlessly in the darkness as most animals did during the day. Her fellow humans, unlike these beasts, found little comfort in sporadic lighting in the midst of extreme turmoil. For most folks in the street, light simply allowed them to accept their fate sooner.

She turned to her left, looking through the passenger-side window of a sharp black Lincoln Continental. The
